Introduction
Understanding Practice
Yoga is much more than a gymnastic: Indian traditions bring together body, respiratory, meditative, devotional and philosophical disciplines. In the West, the word often refers to postures.
Benefits sought
- Flexibility, strength and balance
- Stress management
- Sleep quality
- Contemplative or spiritual exploration
History and evolution
Yogic ideas appear in ancient Indian texts, and then develop in many Hindu, Buddhist and Jain schools. Today's postural yogas also result from innovations of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Practice guidance
- Bringing attention, breath and movement together
- Adapting practice rather than forcing a posture
- Recognizing the diversity of schools
- Do not reduce yoga to its physical dimension
What does a session look like?
A course can include centering, chaining postures, breathing exercises and final relaxation. Styles range from a very soft practice to a sustained effort.
What we know — and what we don't know
Benefits are documented for general wellbeing, balance and some pain, with varying effects depending on style.
The research suggests effects useful for wellbeing, stress, balance and some musculoskeletal pain. The results do not allow yoga to be attributed a general efficacy against diseases.
Precautions and limits
- Report pregnancy, hypertension, glaucoma, bone fragility or injury.
- Avoid painful postures and forced corrections.
- Do not practice extreme respiratory retention without competent supervision.
Severe pain, aggravation, unusual symptom or psychological distress require appropriate professional advice. Orabel does not offer any diagnosis or prescription.
