History and context
Between the 11th and 13th centuries, sovereigns and donors built an exceptional density of monuments. Earthquakes, sometimes controversial restorations and political transformations marked the landscape, which remains associated with living communities.
Why is this place spiritual?
Building or supporting a monument could produce merit in Buddhist design. Buddha's paintings, relics and images are not mere decorations; they organize devotion and teaching.
What the landscape makes you feel
The plain is discovered by fragments rather than from a single point. The razing light reveals the silhouettes, but the very touristic sunrises should not lead to climb on fragile structures.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
The feeling of immensity comes from the repetition of monuments and the open landscape. It can be spiritually meaningful without assuming a global energy concentration.
Discover with respect
- Do not climb the closed temples.
- Remove your shoes from the active shrines.
- Carefully address the political context and local communities.
