Introduction
Understanding the place
The Sainte-Baume is a Provencal grotto-sanctuary that Catholic tradition combines with the retirement of Marie-Madeleine, in the heart of a massive and remarkable forest.
To be retained
- Pilgrimage cave
- Tradition of Marie-Madeleine
- Protected old forest
- March and contemplative withdrawal
History and context
The link between the cave and Mary Magdalene spreads in the Middle Ages, without historical proof of its presence in Provence. The pilgrimage is entrusted to the Dominicans in the 13th century and is undergoing several destructions, restorations and recaptures. The current sanctuary remains served by a religious community.
Why is this place spiritual?
The cave expresses withdrawal, repentance and contemplation in the Christian tradition. The climb on foot combines effort, forest and passage from the outer light to the mineral space of the sanctuary.
What the landscape makes you feel
The path crosses an ancient beech grove before reaching the cliff. The humidity, the shadow and echo of the cave produce a striking contrast with the dry Provence.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
The freshness, the acoustics and the narrative of the hermitage nourish powerful feelings. They did not establish the historical presence of Marie-Madeleine nor a curative energy.
Discover with respect
- Present the association to Marie-Madeleine as a tradition.
- Respect the services and fragility of the forest.
- Provide a walk adapted to the conditions.
