Above the plain of Alsace, Mount Sainte-Odile brings together a Christian sanctuary, a tradition of pilgrimage, a vast panorama and the enigmatic pagan Wall.
To be retained
- Alsatian High Spiritual and Cultural Place
- Sanctuary associated with Saint Odile
- Landscape conducive to contemplative walking
- Personal knowledge distinct from historical facts
History and context
The monastery of Hohenbourg is traditionally associated with Saint Odile, patron saint of Alsace, and with a foundation of the High Middle Ages. Renovated over the centuries, the present complex brings together church, chapels, hotel and terraces. The pagan wall, pre- or post-monastic stone walls, recalls that the summit has a historical depth still discussed.
Why is this place spiritual?
The place remains a Catholic sanctuary and a pilgrimage goal. The figure d-Odile, linked in tradition to the healing of the view, invites a symbolic reading of the light and the interior look. The walk in the forest and the opening of the panorama also attract visitors without religious affiliation.
What the landscape makes you feel
The contrast between the wooded ascent, the narrowed space of the chapels and the vast view of the plain creates a very sensitive progression. Morning silence, the path around the rock and the so-called source of St. Odile are often sought for contemplation.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
Some visitors speak of a "loaded" place or of a particular energy, sometimes connected to relief or the pagan Wall. These feelings belong to personal experience and contemporary narratives: they do not constitute a measured physical property of the site.
Discover with respect
- Respect the offices and prayer spaces.
- Stay on the trails around the pagan Wall.
- Do not attribute to the archaeological site a certain ritual function without source.
