Introduction
Understanding the place
Mount Athos is an autonomous community of Orthodox monasteries established on a mountainous peninsula of the Aegean Sea, sometimes called "the Garden of the Mother of God".
To be retained
- Living center of Orthodox monasticism
- Twenty sovereign monasteries
- High place of hesychasm
- Highly regulated access
History and context
The monastic presence was officially established in the 10th century, even though hermits were previously attested. Twenty sovereign monasteries, skits and hermitages preserved libraries, icons and liturgical traditions of great importance to the Orthodox world.
Why is this place spiritual?
The Athonite life is organized around prayer, liturgy, work and hospitality. L-hesychasm, a path of inner silence and repeated prayer, has a major history. The place is not a museum: its first function remains monastic.
What the landscape makes you feel
The sea, forest and mountain surround communities with their own rhythms. Access is regulated and requires authorization. The prohibition of entry to women, inherited from the Avaton rule, is a controversial institutional reality that a respectful presentation should not hide.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
The intensity attributed to Mount Athos is inseparable from centuries of continuous practice, the landscape and the expectations of pilgrims. It is a matter of religious meaning and experience lived, not of objectified energy.
Discover with respect
- Check the access rules and obtain the required authorization.
- Recognize the controversy about exclusion of women.
- Respect strictly the life, schedules and photographs of the communities.
