History and context
In 622, Muhammad and his companions left Mecca for Yathrib, then called al-Madīna. This event, hegira, marked the beginning of the Muslim calendar. The city became the centre of the first community, then a major place of memory and pious visit.
Why is this place spiritual?
Medina evokes the hospitality of the Ansar, the building of a community and the proximity to the Prophet. The visit to his mosque is not a compulsory rite of the Hajj but has immense emotional and devotional importance for many Muslims.
What the landscape makes you feel
The breadth of the esplanade and the repetition of monumental parasols surround a historical heart profoundly transformed by enlargements. For the faithful, prayer and greetings to the Prophet structure the experience.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
The concept of baraka, a blessing, belongs to the vocabulary of many Muslims, with different interpretations according to currents. It must not be translated automatically by physical energy.
