History and context

Built under the reign of Pachacuti according to the prevailing interpretation, the site was abandoned as a permanent residence after the Spanish conquest. It was not unknown to local populations when Hiram Bingham made it known internationally in 1911.

Traditions and philosophies

Why is this place spiritual?

Temples, carved stones, sources and visual relationships with the summits indicate an important ritual dimension. The Incas thought the landscape was inhabited by powers and ancestors, but the exact attribution of each structure must remain cautious.

Location experience

What the landscape makes you feel

The fog that gradually reveals terraces and mountains explains the visual strength of the site. Regulated routes protect a fragile area where water, agriculture and architecture worked together.

Critical Look

Energy, atmosphere and feelings

Machu Picchu is often presented as a vortex or energy center. These modern tourist stories are not proven and can mask the Andean concepts as well as the technical inca genius.
