Introduction
Understanding the place
Ulu的u is a major sacred place for the Aungu, traditional owners of the park. Its forms, water points and itineraries are linked to the Tjukurpa, set of laws, stories and responsibilities.
To be retained
- Living place of the people of Anguilla
- Tjukurpa: law, stories and responsibility
- Joint management of the park
- Ascension closed since 2019
History and context
The landscape has been inhabited and covered for tens of thousands of years. After colonization and a long period of dispossession, the property was restored to the Angu in 1985 with joint management of the park. The ascent is permanently closed in 2019 at the request of the traditional owners.
Why is this place spiritual?
Tjukurpa connects ancestral beings, territory, behavior and transmission. Some stories and areas are public, others reserved according to age, gender or role. Respecting the place means accepting that not everything is meant to be seen or told.
What the landscape makes you feel
Walking around the rock reveals cavities, changes in texture and points of water invisible from the viewpoints. Colour variations are spectacular, but listening to the AWangu interpretations is essential.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
Talking only about universal energy may take over the site and erase the Tjukurpa. The power of the place is first and foremost a cultural, ecological and moral relationship carried by its guardians.
Discover with respect
- Do not climb on Ulu
- Respect areas where photography is prohibited.
- Use the names and interpretations of the AWANUS with attention.
