Introduction
Understanding the place
Kasubi is a former palace transformed into the burial place of four kabaka, kings of Buganda. It remains an active spiritual centre for the Baganda.
To be retained
- Major Baganda spiritual centre
- Burial place of four kabaka
- Organic architecture and living knowledge
History and context
Built as a palace in 1882 and converted into a royal burial ground in 1884, the site belongs to older architectural and ceremonial traditions. A 2010 fire destroyed the main building; community knowledge guided reconstruction, and UNESCO removed it from the Danger List in 2023.
Why is this place spiritual?
The tombs connect kingship, ancestors, territory and Buganda continuity. Rituals belong to defined authorities and should not be imitated or reduced to folklore.
What the landscape makes you feel
The progression from living boundary markers into the courtyard and buildings is symbolically organised. People and practices matter as much as architecture.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
Ancestral presence is part of Baganda belief. Orabel presents it as lived religious meaning, distinct from scientific measurement.
Discover with respect
- Follow the directions of custodians and Buganda authorities.
- Do not photograph rites or people without consent.
