Documented knowledge

History and context

The children reported six apparitions between May and October 1917. The context is that of the First World War and of a Portugal that was crossed by strong tensions between the Republic and the Church. The sanctuary was gradually recognized and built in the 20th century; it now welcomes pilgrims from all over the world.

Traditions and philosophies

Why is this place spiritual?

The prayer, peace, penance and immaculate heart of Mary structure the message understood by the Catholic Church. "The secrets" have generated many speculations that must be distinguished from official texts and interpretations.

Location experience

What the landscape makes you feel

The immense open space, the candle-like processions and the Chapel of Apparitions create very different scales. Some pilgrims perform gestures of penance that must remain free and careful.
