- Romería de Pentecost
- Collective fervour and family traditions
- Close to Doñana Park
History and context
Marian devotion is attested in the region at the end of the Middle Ages. The pilgrimage takes its present form over the centuries around brotherhoods from many cities. The modern sanctuary replaces an earlier building damaged by an earthquake.
Why is this place spiritual?
Virgen del Rocío is at the centre of a religion lived by singing, walking, promises, clothing and family ties. The feast combines fervor, Andalusian identity and sociability; it is not only understood since contemplative silence.
What the landscape makes you feel
Apart from pilgrimage, the sandy village and marshes may seem peaceful. At Pentecost, density, music and collective emotion completely transform the place.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
The intensity reported is largely due to the gathering, the rhythm and the shared devotion. It is not an energy independent of the community.
Discover with respect
- Respect the practices of the brotherhoods without folklorizing them.
