Introduction
Understanding the place
Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré is one of the oldest and most important Catholic pilgrimages in North America, dedicated to Saint Anne, mother of Mary according to tradition.
To be retained
- Pilgrimage since the 17th century
- Devotion to St. Anne
- Neoroman basil
- Presence of pilgrims from many cultures
History and context
A first chapel was built in 1658. Healing stories quickly attracted pilgrims from New France and elsewhere. After the fire of the old basilica in 1922, the present building was erected in a neo-Roman style.
Why is this place spiritual?
Saint Anne is associated with the family transmission, protection and accompaniment of the suffering. The sanctuary also has a long relationship with indigenous pilgrims, who must be told their history and without erasing the colonial missionary context.
What the landscape makes you feel
The basilica stands out between the river and the reliefs of Charlevoix. Mosaics, chapels and votive objects testify to generations of prayers.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
Collective hope and healing stories can support some people, and they do not provide treatment or guarantee of results.
Discover with respect
- Do not photograph vulnerable people without agreement.
- Name the missionary context in Aboriginal relations.
- Distinguish faith, testimony and medicine.
