Documented knowledge

History and context

The monastery of Santa Maria was founded in the 11th century, although hermitages were older. Much of it was destroyed during the Napoleonic wars, and was rebuilt in the 19th and 20th centuries. The place also played an important cultural role for Catalan language and identity.

Traditions and philosophies

Why is this place spiritual?

The Moreneta attracts pilgrims and visitors. Benedictine life, the song of Escolania and hermitages record devotion in the rhythm of the mountain.

Location experience

What the landscape makes you feel

The conglomerate needles, funicular, paths and choral singing make up several entrance doors. Getting away from the esplanade reveals a quieter dimension.

Critical Look

Energy, atmosphere and feelings

The singular geology feeds into the stories of energetic mountain or mysterious phenomena. These are the responsibility of popular culture; the visual power of the massif is, it is, very real.
