Introduction
Understanding the place
Puy-en-Velay combines a Romanesque cathedral, a black Virgin, the chapel of Saint Michael d'Aiguilhe and the historic departure of Via Podiensis to Compostela.
To be retained
- Historical departure from Via Podiensis
- Marian Cathedral
- Chapel on volcanic piton
- Spirituality of the Path
History and context
The Marian sanctuary develops in the early Middle Ages on an ancient urban site. The present cathedral, built and enlarged between the 11th and 12th centuries, welcomes pilgrims who have come to receive a blessing before they leave. The chapel of Saint Michael, founded in the 10th century on a volcanic dyke, is another major landmark.
Why is this place spiritual?
The city connects Marian pilgrimage with the spirituality of the walk. The departure is not only geographical: it ritualizes the decision to leave its habits, to walk and to receive hospitality.
What the landscape makes you feel
The stairs, the polychrome volcanic stones and the silhouettes erected on the pitons give the place an almost theatrical relief. The dawn of the start often transforms the cathedral square into a collective passage space.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
Volcanism explains the spectacular shape of the landscape. Energy readings are contemporary; the walker's experience can be intense without assuming an invisible subsoil property.
Discover with respect
- Respect the celebrations and departures of pilgrims.
- Prepare the walk and avoid leaving objects on the way.
- Do not confuse volcanic geology with energy proof.
