Introduction
Understanding the place
Koutammakou is a transboundary Batammariba landscape known for earthen sikien tower houses and the integration of architecture, farming and sacred space.
To be retained
- Living landscape in Togo and Benin
- Earthen architecture inseparable from families
- Ritual, agriculture and dwelling connected
History and context
The landscape reflects long social and technical adaptation to the Atacora Mountains. Its Beninese part later joined the original Togolese UNESCO property; sikien change with families and are not frozen objects.
Why is this place spiritual?
House, territory, ancestors and life-cycle rites are connected. Some meanings belong to families and ritual specialists and are not public.
What the landscape makes you feel
Understanding the place means reading relationships among homes, fields, paths and relief. Community-led visits prevent exoticising the architecture.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
Landscape coherence may be experienced as presence, but it is better understood through practice, knowledge and environment than abstract energy.
Discover with respect
- Do not enter a sikien or photograph ritual life without invitation.
- Pay guides fairly and avoid presenting one interpretation as universal.
