History and context
Brother Roger Schutz moved to Taizé in 1940 and welcomed refugees in particular. After the war, a community of brothers from different Christian denominations was formed. From the 1960s, the youth meetings took on an international dimension.
Why is this place spiritual?
The prayer of Taizé combines short sung sentences, prolonged silence, biblical reading and visual simplicity. L-Ecumenism does not erase doctrinal differences; it seeks a space of encounter and trust.
What the landscape makes you feel
Daily life alternates common prayer, small groups, services and sober meals. Repeating songs can promote collective attention without being presented as a universal technique.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
L-unisson, the number of participants and the shared silence create a very strong atmosphere, and it is explained by the community and musical experience rather than by the particular energy of the field.
Discover with respect
- Participate according to the rules of community reception.
- Respect the times of silence and people of all convictions.
- Do not turn songs into therapeutic promises.
