To be retained
- Romanesque masterpiece
- Pilgrimage linked to Marie-Madeleine
- Departure to Compostela
- Christian Community Always Present
History and context
Founded in the early Middle Ages, the monastery became an important pilgrimage from the eleventh century around relics attributed to Mary Magdalene. The Romanesque basilica of the eleventh and twelfth centuries was famous for its nave, capitals and great tympanium. Its history also included the preaching of the second crusade by Bernard de Clairvaux in 1146, an episode that should be put back in the religious and political violence of his time.
Why is this place spiritual?
In Christianity, Mary Magdalene embodies both the faithfulness, conversion and proclamation of the resurrection. The current monastic community, the services and the departures of pilgrims make Vézelay a living place rather than a simple monument.
What the landscape makes you feel
The climb by the village gradually prepares the entrance into the nave. At the solstice, the sun race emphasizes the axis of the building; this architectural effect nourishes contemplation without requiring esoteric interpretation.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
Light, slope, acoustics and centuries of pilgrimage can give an impression of density. The narratives of landlines are a matter of unestablished modern interpretations.
