- Pilgrimage of peace and simplicity
- Major artistic ensemble
- City and additional hermitage
History and context
An ancient Umbrian city, Assisi became a major pilgrimage after the death of Francis in 1226. The basilica built on its tomb brings together two churches decorated with fundamental painted cycles for Western art. The monastery of St. Clair and the surrounding hermitages prolong this history.
Why is this place spiritual?
Franciscan spirituality insists on brotherhood, counting and peace. Francis should not be reduced to a romantic figure of ecology: his relationship to creation is part of a Christian theology and a radical practice of poverty.
What the landscape makes you feel
The city is on the slope facing the valley. The crowd of the basilica contrasts with the silence of the Carceri hermitage in the woods of Mount Subasio.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
The feeling of appeasement is due to the landscape, the stories of simplicity and the continuity of the pilgrimage. It does not guarantee any therapeutic effect.
