Introduction
Understanding Practice
Sophrology offers exercises of dynamic relaxation and positive visualization. It is mainly used as a support for stress, mental preparation or comfort, not as a replacement for treatment.
Benefits sought
- Stress management
- Preparation for an event
- Wellbeing
- Better body perception
History and evolution
The method was created in the 20th century by Alfonso Caycedo, a psychiatrist, who combines Western relaxation, phenomenology and Asian inspirations.
Practice guidance
- Realizing the body
- Mobilizing resource images
- Repeat short exercises
- Promoting autonomy rather than dependence on practitioners
What does a session look like?
After an exchange, the session alternates accessible movements, breathing and guided visualization, then a time of description of the experience.
What we know — and what we don't know
Some positive results exist, but the specific effectiveness remains insufficient for many uses.
The literature contains positive studies in some contexts, but often small or with various protocols, and does not support general therapeutic promises.
Precautions and limits
- Choose a practitioner who knows his or her limitations and directs to a caregiver.
- Report trauma or psychiatric disorder before intensive visualization.
- Stop an exercise that increases anxiety.
Severe pain, aggravation, unusual symptom or psychological distress require appropriate professional advice. Orabel does not offer any diagnosis or prescription.
Status in France
The title of sophrologist is not a regulated health profession in France. A private certification does not confer the right to diagnose or treat a disease.
Explain his borrowings without pretending to represent yoga or Buddhism faithfully.
