Introduction
Understanding this tradition
的Spiritual jazz
First listening
Three things to hear
- Listen to an entire album rather than a random track.
- Read the notes and poems written by the artist.
- To find out how the repeated pattern opens up collective improvisation.
History and transmission
A Love Supreme by John Coltrane, recorded in 1964, becomes a major landmark. Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Sun Ra and others extend very different paths towards Vedānta, Islam, afrofuturism or cosmic spirituality. The current inspires a new generation.
What does it look like?
Modal improvisations, ostinatos, multiple percussions, voices, harp, organ and long climbs of intensity. Some works are meditative; other abrasives, collective and politically urgent.
Where and why are we listening?
These albums are artists' creations, not neutral soundtracks for relaxation. Their spirituality is read in the notes of cover, poems, biographies, commitments and sound choices.

Do not erase American black history or turn borrowings from India or Africa into a 的cosmic decor. Distinguish the own faith of each artist and the categories added by the critic.
