To be retained
- Masterpiece of the Andalus
- Cathedral since the 13th century
- Overlay Architecture
- Religious history always debated
History and context
The mosque was founded under Abd al-Rahman I in the eighth century and enlarged by several sovereigns. After the Christian conquest of 1236, it became a cathedral and gradually received chapels and reborn. The accounts of an earlier church on the site were the subject of archaeological and political debates.
Why is this place spiritual?
For Islamic history, the building bears witness to a major intellectual and religious capital. For Catholicism, it is an active cathedral. To present it as a simple symbol of harmony erases conquests, transformations and controversies of access to worship.
What the landscape makes you feel
The forest of red and white arches creates a horizontal space almost without apparent center, interrupted by the cathedral choir and chapels. The superposition is visible rather than resolved.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
The infinite feeling arises from architectural repetition and light. It can be contemplative without being interpreted as physical force.
Discover with respect
- Name conquests and changes of use.
- Respect the fact that the place is today an active cathedral.
- Avoid the simple story of always harmonious coexistence.
