Documented knowledge

History and context

The mission was founded in 1776 in the territory of the Acjachemen. The missionary system imposed conversion, labour, displacement and profound transformation on the indigenous communities, while diseases and violence caused heavy losses. The earthquake of 1812 destroyed the great church.

Traditions and philosophies

Why is this place spiritual?

The site remains linked to Catholicism and Franciscan memory, but a responsible presentation must place the voices and continuity of the acjachemen at the centre, rather than telling a peaceful evangelization.

What the landscape makes you feel

Cloisters, fountains, adobe and ruins offer a harmonious setting. This beauty should not anesthetize the coercive history of the mission.
