Introduction
Understanding the place
Cologne Cathedral is a major Gothic monument built to accommodate the reliquary attributed to the Magi and remains an active Catholic center.
To be retained
- Gothic masterpiece
- Reliquary of the Magi
- Construction spanning six centuries
- Monument and place of worship
History and context
The construction began in 1248 and was interrupted for centuries before being completed in the 19th century according to the medieval plans found. The reliquary of the Magi, brought to Cologne in the 12th century, explains in large part the ambition of the project and its role as a pilgrimage.
Why is this place spiritual?
Verticality and the path to the choir organize a theology of light and heavenly Jerusalem. Relics are a matter of devotional tradition; their historical authenticity is not established by modern methods.
What the landscape makes you feel
At the exit of the station, the façade appears almost without any recoil. The interior imposes another temporality: pillars, stained glass and reverberation temporarily remove urban noise.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
The unusual scale and contrast with the city explain the grip. It is not necessary to invoke an invisible force to recognize the depth of the experience.
Discover with respect
