Introduction
Understanding Practice
Chiropractic uses, among other things, spinal manipulations. Some historical currents invoke general "subluxations"; this notion should not be used to promise the treatment of various diseases.
Benefits sought
- Low blood pressure
- Some cervix
- Mobility
- Musculoskeletal comfort
History and evolution
Daniel David Palmer founded chiropractic in 1895. The profession was institutionalized and some currents have come closer to a data-based musculoskeletal approach.
Practice guidance
- Screening
- Informed consent
- Targeted mobilization or manipulation
- Movement advice and reassessment
What does a session look like?
After anamnesis and examination, the chiropractor can propose mobilisation, manipulation or exercises. The strategy must be explained and revised if it does not help.
What we know — and what we don't know
Small improvements possible for some back pain and cervix; lack of clear benefit for non-musculoskeletal diseases.
For some back or neck pain, the mean effect is modest and comparable to other options. There is insufficient evidence to treat asthma, hypertension or manipulation infections.
Precautions and limits
- Report bone fragility, trauma, vascular disease, cancer or neurological symptoms.
- Ask for alternatives to quick cervical manipulation.
- A responsible practitioner searches for alert signals and sends them to the doctor.
Severe pain, aggravation, unusual symptom or psychological distress require appropriate professional advice. Orabel does not offer any diagnosis or prescription.
Status in France
The title of chiropractor is regulated and requires recognised training or authorisation and registration with the competent authority.
Avoid systematic X-rays, long packages imposed and universal statements on subluxations.
