Introduction
Understanding the place
The Externsteines are the sandstone pillars of the Teutobourg forest, marked by medieval arrangements and become an important place for contemporary neo-Pagan imaginations.
To be retained
- Remarkable geological formation
- Documented medieval Christian uses
- Contemporary neopaganism
- Ancient myths often rebuilt
History and context
Prehistoric traces show ancient passages, but archaeology does not confirm the existence of a great Saxon sanctuary before Christianization. Caves, stairs and relief of the Descent of the Cross bear witness to mainly medieval Christian uses. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the site is charged with nationalist, esoteric and archeoastronomic theories.
Why is this place spiritual?
Neo-Pagan, esoteric and individual visitors gather there today, especially in solstice. This contemporary spiritual life must be described without automatically projecting its beliefs about prehistory.
What the landscape makes you feel
The abrupt verticality of the rocks in the middle of the forest creates an impressive natural scene. The cavities and the viewpoints reinforce the sense of threshold.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
No power centre function is demonstrated. Orabel distinguishes the current feeling, established medieval uses and modern political myths, some of which have been instrumentalized by the far right.
Discover with respect
- Do not present the Saxon sanctuary as a fact.
- Recognize the nationalist recovery of the site.
- Respect nature reserve and restrictions during gatherings.
