Introduction
Understanding the place
The Cathedral of Aachen developed around the Palatine Chapel of Charlemagne, a Carolingian masterpiece and coronation site for many sovereigns.
To be retained
- Exceptional Carolingian core
- Memoir of Charlemagne
- Place of coronation
- Cathedral always active
History and context
The chapel is raised around 790–800 in the palatial complex of Charlemagne. After its burial in Aix in 814, the place becomes a center of dynastic memory. Gothic and Baroque additions surround today the octagonal nucleus. The cathedral was the first German monument inscribed on the world heritage.
Why is this place spiritual?
It is an active Catholic site and houses relics presented during major periodic pilgrimages. Its imperial dimension also recalls the historical links, sometimes conflicting, between political and sacred power.
What the landscape makes you feel
The passage from dark l的octogone to golden mosaics and the glazed Gothic chapel creates a succession of scales. Central geometry gives a sense of order without proving a unique secret symbolism.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
Gold, stone, acoustics and imperial memory explain a large part of the intensity felt. Numerological readings must remain interpretations.
Discover with respect
- Respect celebrations and relics.
- To approach Charlemagne with the context of his time, including his wars.
- Do not transform geometry into esoteric evidence.
