History and context
A first basilica was built in the fourth century under Constantine. The present building, built between the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, mobilises among others Bramante, Michelangelo, Maderno and Bernin. The excavations revealed an ancient necropolis and memorial, but the identification of the remains to Peter remains an affirmation of tradition and interpretation.
Why is this place spiritual?
Peter is understood by Catholics as an apostle, martyr and figure of the unity of the Church. Liturgy, pilgrimages and pontifical gatherings give the place a global reach, inseparable from the institution and its complex history.
What the landscape makes you feel
The elliptical square, the huge nave, the dome light and the descent to the caves make up a journey from public gathering to funeral memory.
Energy, atmosphere and feelings
The scale, art and crowd can cause powerful grasping. It is a matter of perception, faith and memory more than measurable energy.
