Intention

« Give direction to action, then check what it actually produces. »

⌁

Definition

Connaissances documentées

The conscious orientation of an action towards a purpose or value, distinct from the result actually produced.

Good intent does not guarantee a good effect. L-ethics therefore asks to consider both the motivation, means, consequences and the possibility of repair.

Origin of the term and context

Latin intentio means "volition towards". In Buddhism, volition plays a central role in karma; in Islam, niyya means the intention that directs the act.

Éclairage scientifique

Why does it matter?

Making an intention can help to guide attention and perseverance. Claims alone do not transform reality without behaviour, favorable context and revision of errors.

Mise en pratique

How can it be explored or practised?

  • Translating it into concrete behaviour
  • Ask after the blow what effect was perceived
  • Adjust without self-defense

Misconceptions and points of caution

  • The intention does not obviate the impact.
  • Very strong desire does not control events.
  • The rituals of intention do not guarantee any external results.
